Asbestos Surveys – HSG 264 Asbestos: The survey guide
Asbestos Survey Guide HSG 264 was published in January 2010 and was the long awaited replacement for MDHS100. This document, although guidance, is used by UKAS and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to measure the quality of asbestos surveys and sets out a number of key issues and checks that a client should consider before appointing an asbestos surveying organisation.
Brief Overview of HSG 264:
- Type 2 = Management Survey
- Type 3 = Refurbishment or Demolition Survey
- The approach a Dutyholder should take to check a survey in respect to accuracy, suitability and adequacy is more clearly defined
- UKAS Accreditation demonstrates Technical Competence for undertaking surveys
- Further emphasis and importance has been placed on the Survey Planning Phase
- The survey planning phase should aim to reduce any caveats and areas of ‘no access’ as far as is reasonably practicable
- Type 1 and 2 Surveys are now termed Management Surveys and Type 3 Surveys are now termed Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys
- A survey strategy has been suggested for both non-domestic and domestic properties
- Survey Report and Asbestos Register complexity and possible format has been provided.
The full HSG 264 booklet can be purchased from the HSE website www.hsebooks.co.uk and will include in-depth information on the topics listed below in addition to extensive appendices and references.
Asbestos Survey Name Changes
New survey names have been introduced to assist the Client/Duty Holder in understanding the purpose of the survey and to help them select the most appropriate survey for their needs. The name changes are also designed to promote the management of asbestos.
